The Blue Mountain Short-Term Owners Association (BMSTA) is playing a crucial role in representing the interests of the tourism accommodations industry throughout these discussions. In collaboration with various stakeholders, including Town Staff, residents and ultimately Town Council, the BMSTA advocates for fair and equitable legislation. Their mission is to ensure that the regulations facilitate a sustainable and investment-friendly environment for tourism accommodation units, within the Blue Mountains.
BMSTA's extensive membership base is diverse, comprising investment property owners who depend on the tourism sector's vitality for continued financial success of the Town’s local economy, as well as the continued ROI from the investments themselves. Therefore, the association's focus on finding solutions that benefit all parties involved is paramount. Through continued dialogue, the BMSTA aims to voice concerns, share insights, and contribute to policy development that fosters a thriving tourism accommodations market.
The Council-approved stakeholders working group is tasked with several critical objectives, including:
1. Equitable Legislation: Achieving regulations that are fair, equitable and considerate of the various stakeholders. The goal is to continue to achieve positive bylaw metrics as it relates to today’s incredibly low volume of bylaw complaints, by continuing to generate the low metric results that we see today shall foster and promote an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation amongst each stakeholder community.
2. Investment Security: Establishing confidence in the regulatory framework ensures that property owners feel secure in their investments. Legislation must safeguard against potential punitive measures that could deter investment in the area.
3. Sustainability: Formulating legislative guidelines that protect the unique charm and character of the Blue Mountains while promoting responsible tourism. Sustainable practices will ensure that the region remains a desirable destination for generations to come.
4. Inclusivity of Different Accommodation Types: Addressing short-term accommodation (STA) units, Bed and Breakfast units, while considering CRUs by establishing a clear licensing protocol for these properties will ensure that all types of tourism accommodations are appropriately regulated and monitored.
